Meet Captain Mike
Michael Chinn
Boating in the Pacific Northwest is one of my favorite hobbies and passions. The joy of excursions on the water was learned from a young age and this joy has been pursued my entire life. An old photo depicts me, a six month old baby, in the arms of my grandfather as he pilots his wooden Martinac through the waters of Commencement Bay. This is where it would all start. In the following years you would soon find a small three year old me at the helm, attentively looking out the window, hands on the wheel, under the watchful eye of my former naval sailor grandpa.
Throughout my younger years and continuing still, boating with family and friends on the waters of Puget Sound, Salish Sea, and adjacent lakes or canals have been among the most memorable times.
I have become one of the fortunate few who have been able to turn a passion into a career. For the past decade and a half I have enjoyed the life of a professional mariner. This work has taken me around the world where I have captained yachts, worked in marine construction, became a commercial fisherman, hauled cargo throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and practiced in marine survey. Each step of the way I have gained experience and learned something of value which I can now bring back and share with the community of boating people who are close to me.
Being on the water has provided for me many of the best times and memories. It is my hope, that I can use the knowledge and skills I have accumulated over a lifetime to help others experience and enjoy boating in the Northwest like I have. I want to do this by adding to experience and education of boaters, by setting a high standard for yacht and small craft surveying, and by providing the ease of effective vessel management to those with extra busy lives. Where by, I hope to raise the standards, skills and knowledge of all those who form the family we call, Northwest Boaters.”
